Yoga is not just a physical exercise; it is also about mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. A common misconception about yoga is that it is only a set of physical poses, but nothing can be further from the truth. The word yoga actually means the Latin word “y” meaning to joint and “s” meaning the state or condition. This combination of words gives us the definition of yoga as a way of life. It is an ancient practice with multiple benefits. There are as many benefits of stretching as there are positions in yoga.
Stretching for Yoga is essential to help maintain a healthy body, for its prevention and healing of injury and disease, and for optimal performance and ease of movement in yoga. A healthy body is able to stretch for longer and greater periods with more ease and less pain. Yoga helps to release stress that can result in stiffness and soreness that can limit the range of motion, cause cramps, increase muscle tightness and decrease flexibility. There are several poses that are very beneficial for your posture and flexibility and will not only stretch your muscles and joints but will also improve your breathing.
